A theory of magic presented by fanfic:

A little girl, born of a wizard/witch and a Muggle, begins to show her own magic as a child.  The parents fight over it, the Muggle parent wanting her to be "normal" and brought up so.  The child, upset by the fighting, wishes she would disappear.
