Alternate scenes
Sep. 26th, 2004 01:59 pmThese are something I wrote quite a while ago, back when I first wrote the scene where Lily finds out she's pregnant. I saved them in a private entry, planning to post them once I finished with the crisis and everything was settled. So the time has finally come!
From my entry:
Anyway, as I was writing, a bunch of alternate scenes occured to me - some I've entertained before, others strangers. For instance, this one, where Lily does indeed drop out - after she gets her apartment with Lynn the Roommate and gets settled in:
One Saturday Lynn was out running errands, and Lily was busy cleaning the kitchen when someone knocked on the door. Seizing the dishrag that had been wiping the counter by itself, she hurried to open the door.
There stood Albus Dumbledore.
Lily screamed and threw the dishrag in the air. After this greeting, she calmed down, though still felt horrified. "Come - come in..."
"Thank you, Lily," said Dumbledore graciously.
"I'll - I'll make some tea - sit down, please..."
She fumbled terribly with the teapot. The dining room was across from the kitchen, and the view was clear. Dumbledore sat at the small table, veined hands folded on the surface.
"I'm not going to drag you back to school, Lily," he said gently....
And then another scene where it's the same situation, and Lily's owled her sisters at school:
The unfamiliar, generic postal owl circled down to the Gryffindor table. As soon as it came within reaching distant, a sudden war broke out.
Rose and Mary leaped for it, but the boys were boys and were more numerous. Rose and David forgot their love in the interest of getting that little bit of parchment attached to the owl - which, startled by its uncontrolled popularity, flapped up a bit, trying to get to the one redhead of the group.
James won - he ripped the letter off, crowing, "Got it!" - and the next minute found himself slammed against the floor on his back, with the end of Mary's wand pressed into his neck.
"Hand - it - over," she snarled. "To Rose. Now."
There was no choice of the matter. Slowly, he extended his hand, and Rose snatched it up, then stalked out of the hall. After a moment, Mary released him and followed her out...
This is my really new one, that just came to me as Lily spoke a certain line that night - it's where I truly go insane:
"Do you really think he's going to still want me when he finds out I'm carrying Severus's child?"
"What?" came a sleepy voice. The girls turned; there stood James in a robe, standing at the bottom of the stairs. "What did you say?"
No one moved, let alone answered. Then, quite suddenly, Lily said in clipped tones, "Nothing. I didn't say anything."
"But - I thought I heard you say -"
"It was nothing. You dreamed it. Go back to bed."
Before he could say anything else, Lily walked very quickly up her own stairs. When she entered her dorm, she cast a spell on her roommates' beds so no noise would penetrate their area, then lit a few of the lamps along the wall. Moving still very quickly, she opened her trunk and began loading it with everything in her bedside table.
Rose appeared in the doorway.
"Lily-"
"I'm going tonight." Her hands shook. "I can't wait now."
Rose seemed too appalled to speak. Finally, she whispered, "Please, don't-"
Lily said nothing, but continued to load her trunk.
"You can't." Her voice rose desperately. "I - I won't let you!"
Lily had her wand in hand as she was throwing belongings hapharzardly, but at her sister's words she stopped completely, and did something she never would have dreamed she would do: she straightened up and pointed her wand directly at Rose. "You are not stopping me," she said, calmly but with finality. "If you try to wake up Chasity or Nicole, I'll silence you, and if you try to run out the door to get help, I'll stun you."
Rose stared at her sister, her face very white. She sat down suddenly in a chair behind her.
Lily gave her a desperate, almost pleading look, as if to say, I don't want to do this, please don't make me. Then, looking to make sure she hadn't forgotten anything, she locked the trunk. "I'll need Mary's broom," she muttered to herself.
"I'll get it," said Rose very quietly. Lily threw her a sharp look, and Rose's next words had an acid bite to them. "What do you want, for me to swear on our parents' memory I'll do just that and nothing else?"
Lily said nothing, but didn't look away. Her eyes were still suspicious.
Rose spoke in a low, but clear voice. "I'll get the broom, Lily."
Finally, Lily dropped her gaze. "Thank you."
Rose left, and returned a moment later with Mary's broom - followed closely by Mary herself.
"What's going on?" she demanded as she entered the room. Her voice rose as she saw Lily's packed and closed trunk. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
Lily didn't hesitate. She raised her wand again, and spoke the words quickly: "Silencio! Petrificus partialitus!" [Gah, I am so incredibly bad at inventing curses...it's the Leg-Locking one, you know...]
Rose let out a cry as Mary collapsed to the floor, her eyes wide and shocked. Lily's own breath caught.
"I'm sorry," she said, speaking rapidly. "I really am, but I have to get out of here -" She motioned wildly at her trunk, which rose quickly in the air, and she quickly stepped over to take the broom out of Rose's numb hand. Quickly, she kissed her on the cheek. Rose didn't respond. She bent over Mary and kissed her on the forehead, feeling her throat clench.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, and then she hurried out the door.
