So, after reading this post that even further confirmed that Dumbledore's about to die (Really, at this point if the sixth book happens, and he's still alive at the end, I for one will receive just as much shock as though we had no warning.), [livejournal.com profile] buttaflykisses3 and I were discussing some of the direct consequences, especially upon Hogwarts.

And so I thought, well, McGonagall will become headmistress, of course, as she's deputy.  Headmistress McGonagall.

Then I thought, who will become deputy headmaster/mistress in her place?

And instantly it hit me - SNAPE.

Maybe it's because I read a fic where he ends up as headmaster when both Dumbledore and McGonagall were gone - first it made me go WTF - then I realized, oh.  Of course.  That turns Hogwarts into a place of terror, but still.

Anyway.  Anyone disagree?  Would like to suggest Binns would run for deputy headmaster?

In conclusion:  God, it's fun to predict Ms. Rowling's every move.

I have to admit that I would be rather ecstatic if Dumbledore was brutally killed in HBP or the seventh book. I've never been much of a fan of him (He was ok in SS until he awarded all those points to Gryffindor and unfairly took the House Cup away from Slytherin.). I've had a theory about how he's actually an evil man who plots with Voldemort and kills bunnies going ever since I read GoF.

McGonagall would make an awesome Headmistress I think and I would just die, of happiness, if Snape was made Deputy Headmaster. He is by far the best character in the books and I can just never get enough of him. Making him Deputy Headmaster would just be the icing on the cake for me.

But wouldn't Flitwick or Sprout have senority over Snape? I don't know anything about boarding school politics, but I think it would be a snub to them if a younger, less experienced teacher was promoted over their heads.

Maybe they wouldn't be interested in administative, boring things? I know there are teachers who like to - teach. Not get responsabilities they're not interested in. (The Head of House business is still a rather personal one, it's not like drawing schedules or such.)

You'd think that Flitwick and Sprout both have seniority, considering that Snape is only in his mid-30's.

However, in the books, McGonagall and Snape seem to function as Dumbledore's right and left hands. If Minerva ever becomes Headmistress, it's likely that she'd be most used to having Severus as her immediate subordinate.

That said, I *would* like to see a fic with Flitwick or Sprout as Head or Deputy Head, and Snape content in his role as Head of Slytherin.

Well, there is Flitwick, who is older than Severus and has more Seniority, or even Madame Sprout.

*nods* That's why I, and probably others, assume Snape. It was he who accompanied McGonagall and Dumbledore to rescue Harry from Moody/Crouch Jr.

Snape for Deputy Head!

You need strict discipline in a large school like Hogwarts. Flitwick is a pushover and Sprout seems like she'd also be rather lax in the discipline department. Despite their House rivalries, if it's one thing that Severus and Minerva would agree on, it's the need for rules and proper behavior. Actually, making Deputy Head might temper Snape's bitterness -- he'd get some recognition and some respect.

I get the impression from the books that Snape (and McGonagall) is Dumbledore's right-hand man. In particular, I'm thinking of how it was Snape and McGonagall who accompanied Dumbledore to rescue Harry from Moody/Crouch Jr. And, as someone else suggested, Flitwick or Sprout may not be interested in being headmaster or mistress.
